Class Jay
Welcome to Class Jay
In our class you will find a nurturing, engaging environment where all children feel safe and secure, and reach their full potential. We are the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) where learning takes place through purposeful play opportunities that are led and directed by the children. Throughout the year we help children to develop the fundamental learning skills and attitudes that will support them as they progress through the school. In class we encourage each child to be themselves, to make mistakes and to show kindness to others.
We are fortunate to have a spacious classroom and amazing outdoor space, where children have the opportunity to explore the learning environments inside and outside on a daily basis. The children use our outdoor learning area all year round, so please make sure that your child has appropriate clothing for all weather conditions. They will need a coat, hat, gloves, scarf and wellies in the winter and a sun hat and sun cream in the summer. The children in Class Jay work on the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, which is organised into seven areas of Learning and Development. These areas are as follows:
Prime Areas:
Communication and language development
involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.
Physical development
involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.
Personal, social and emotional development
involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.
Specific Areas:
Literacy
development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest.
Mathematics
involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures.
Understanding the world
involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.
Expressive arts and design
involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.
Each area of learning has a number of relevant early learning goals for the children to work towards. All of these seven areas of learning are taught on a daily basis both in class and in our outside classroom, in a very fun and practical way. The day consists of short carpet sessions followed by the children having the opportunity to learn through play and extend on what they learnt during the carpet sessions. During these choosing sessions they may also be asked to carry out an adult focused activity in a small group or on a one-to-one basis.
In Class Jay we encourage a love of reading. The children have a calm space to share books with the peers and adults. Every day the children will be read a story. We also pair up with the Year 6s and do Reading Partners once a week. This is a lovely opportunity for the older children as well as the younger childen.
